Not for viewing. Unless there comes a killer application for viewing , which is appealing to all communities (similar to SMS), the viewing part of VAS is unlikely to take off. So it is not the money but the concept. All the stake holders of VAS (the content provider, aggregator, application developers and service providers) have to promote the concept aggressively and then look for money. regrads, Kumar ----- Original Message ----- From: Banibrata Dutta To: MoMo Bangalore Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2008 10:26 PM Subject: [MoMoBangalore] News & Views: Paid mobile entertainment losing steam Hi, Here's an enlightening article on the topic that may be of interest to the mobile VAS (entertainment vert.) community here: http://www.business-standard.com/common/news_article.php?autono=328294&leftnm=8&subLeft=0&chkFlg= For folks who are directly or indirectly having exposure to this verticle, would you be so kind as to share your views, i.e. whether you agree with this article, or not. -- regards, Banibrata http://www.linkedin.com/in/bdutta http://octapod.wordpress.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________ bangalore mailing list bangalore at mobilemonday.in http://mobilemonday.in/mailman/listinfo/bangalore -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Now that SP is supporting UPA, I guess we can expect 3G to be a reality soon ;-) - The article says users were offered one month free trial. Did they not figure out in that one month how good or bad the speeds are? I can't imagine the connectivity being tolerable during the trial period and after they went pay they figured it was not good enough. - I think these providers should provide free streaming until 3G is a reality. This way people could get hooked onto it. This period can be used by the VAS providers to learn what is that an Indian mobile user really wants. Keep improving the product and start charging when there is a good user base. - At this point of time I personally use GPRS to just browse plain mobile sites. No patience to keep waiting and waiting for the download to happen. - The other serious question is will users in India use the mobile to see a film? Are the screens big enough to assume the third/fourth screen would become the 'first screen' in India? I doubt it. If it does, spectacle companies and ophthalmologists have a bright future in India :-( They can look forward to building a huge client base in the coming years. - I would use the mobile to see a few seconds of video but not an entire serial or movie. But then that is me, each user has his/her own viewing habits. regards, Banibrata Dutta wrote: > Hi, > > Here's an enlightening article on the topic that may be of interest to > the mobile VAS (entertainment vert.) community here: > http://www.business-standard.com/common/news_article.php?autono=328294&leftnm=8&subLeft=0&chkFlg > = > > For folks who are directly or indirectly having exposure to this > verticle, would you be so kind as to share your views, i.e. whether > you agree with this article, or not. > > -- > regards, > Banibrata > http://www.linkedin.com/in/bdutta > http://octapod.wordpress.com -- Mahesh CEO Greynium Information Technologies Pvt. EDGE speeds aren't bad - but the larger question is what do people hope to do with their phones. Even in mature 3G markets, mobile internet usage is still considered (emphasis on "considered" though people may actually be using it more seriously) as "emergency usage". In a nascent market like ours - porn / personalization of phones still is the primary usage driver of the mobile web. For a large part of the market which is not into this, the mobile web has little to offer at this stage. I personally do check mail on the phone - but its only when I'm traveling and have no easy access to a laptop/DSL line. It may have to do with more than just the speeds. The market may actually be tiring of the "entertainment" novelty, and there's not enough "utility" driving usage yet. [ Of course we're hoping to change that with Zook :) ] Rgds, Sameer On Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 10:34 AM, B.G. It does not matter if the startup is more than 1 year old or any number of years as long as the product is new. Another category could be startup 'performers' - companies that have actually realised some of the potential - i guess babajob, tringme, mchek and the others would go into the category. it would be good to have names for both categories. ps> deepankar : hope that answers your question. What about Comat? We aren't exactly a startup, but having shut down all other activities except the current startup-ish one, would probably qualify. Comat sets up and operates telecentres in rural areas across India. These telecentres offer a variety of information-based services, from prepaid mobile recharges to correspondence banking. We are a rural information services retail company. Our product is telecentre, backed by the logistics, monitoring and training models that make their operation possible. Keep them coming. DimDim, Zyme, Kalculate, etc all look good. Looked at AuthWave, their site does not have any information, there is another company called SafeChannel ( www.safechannel.com) promoted by Jay Chaudhry, a successful entrepreneur and based out of Bangalore thats also in the security space. I guess I will use some companies from this list in the coming days but we do have a series of meetings scheduled from August, so do spread the word and keep the suggestions coming. Nischala : yes, we are just focussed on technology companies or companies that are using technology to deliver innovative and much needed services (eg, Comat). regards kallol On Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 11:37 PM, Vikas Rana wrote: > Hi Kallol, > > I would like to add mine - www.mustseeindia.com > We are Bangalore based startup focusing on trip planning and travel > sharing.
