[MoMoBangalore] AirTel Bharti's Director of Technology -- Don Price, on Manage-services business-model and other things...

Hi,
It is indeed an interesting and thought provoking read, it sort of throws you off the chair. After reading this article I am grappling with some of these questions,

How would one define Airtel?
What does Airtel really do?
Do they own, only ideas?
Can you define your customer realtionship in terms of KPIs and SLAs? I can't seem to get the right equipment even if I give the vendor a printout of the spec sheet from the manufacturer's website

Will Airtel become a media company, one that generates/markets content to consumers but buys bandwidth from the company that manages its pipes(not sure if the pipes belong to Airtel anymore)

Hi Banibrata,

It is indeed a very good read.

What I found amusing though was this statement. /" "Give me managed
services for 3G because I need the core competence.""/. This is quite
funny because by definition you cannot buy competence, competencies are
organizational learning built painstakingly by companies over a period
of time. Even if you can packetize and sell it then it does not remain a
source of advantage anymore. Infact what is the advantage for Airtel is
exactly the opposite, what John Hagel call a competency at the
edge(http://edgeperspectives.typepad.com/edge_perspectives/2007/09/convergence-or-.html).
Core does not matter any more.
