I do not have much information to comment on the validity of this article or
their claim. However, in my opinion it will be a long way to go to achieve
this both in terms of technical and commercial.
Technical:
--------------
1) Arguably, GPRS configuration is not easy
2) Screen size is small (considering only the mobile handsets not PDA and
other variants)
3) Speed is not that great compare to the Broadband
4) Coverage problem
Commercial
-----------------
1) GPRS awareness is very low. Still major mobile users are considered
mobile phone as a voice device. Only non-voice application popular among the
mobile user community is SMS. This is also due to the economical charges.
2) Indian market is very price sensitive and it is still considered as
expensive
Nevertheless, the market is picking up due to the introduction of new smart
phones in an economical price points and innovative applications, which
forcing the mobile users to get connected on the GPRS service not the other
way round.
In my opinion GPRS can not replace the traditional connectivity paradigm but
certainly it will complement the traditional system to stay people connected
anytime, anywhere, anyone.
Cheers,
ganges......
